Power Pass
Power Pass is a play-action concept built directly from the traditional Power running play. By aggressively selling the downhill run, the offense forces linebackers and safeties to attack the line of scrimmage before throwing behind them. It is one of the best complementary passes for teams that consistently establish the Power run.
Why Power Pass Works
The offensive line, running back, and quarterback all present a convincing Power run look. As second-level defenders fill their run fits, passing windows open behind them. Because the action mirrors a familiar run, defenders often hesitate recovering into coverage.
Best Formations
The I Formation is the traditional alignment because it naturally supports downhill Power action while giving the quarterback a comfortable play-action mesh.
Personnel
11 or 21 Personnel both work well. A physical running game and a quarterback who can reset quickly after the fake are more important than elite arm strength.

Responsibilities
- Quarterback: Sell the Power fake, reset quickly, and work the progression.
- Running back: Carry out the run fake before becoming a checkdown if tagged.
- Offensive line: Sell Power blocking while maintaining pass protection integrity.
- Tight end: Run the primary intermediate route.
- Receivers: Stretch coverage vertically and create route spacing.
Quarterback Progression
- Execute the Power fake.
- Read the linebackers.
- Throw the intermediate route if open.
- Progress to the deep route.
- Check down or scramble if necessary.
Coverage Adjustments
Cover 2
Attack behind the linebackers before the safeties close.
Cover 3
Read the hook/curl defenders and throw into the vacated window.
Man Coverage
Trust crossing routes to create separation.
Blitz
Complete the fake only if protection allows, then deliver quickly.
Coaching Points
- The fake must match the Power run exactly.
- Keep eyes downfield after the mesh.
- Receivers maintain route depth and spacing.
- Do not force throws into recovering defenders.
Common Youth Mistakes
- Weak run fake.
- Quarterback rushing mechanics.
- Linemen abandoning pass protection.
- Receivers drifting from landmarks.
Installation Progression
Master the Power run first, then install the play-action fake, quarterback footwork, and receiver timing before practicing against live defensive reactions.
Practice Drill
Alternate Power and Power Pass during team periods so defenders cannot predict whether the offense is running or throwing.
Youth Coaching Tips
The better your Power run becomes, the more effective Power Pass will be. Sell every fake with full effort.
Why Power Pass Succeeds
Power Pass succeeds because it capitalizes on aggressive run fits, creating high-percentage throws behind linebackers committed to stopping the run.
