Counter Pass
Counter Pass is a play-action concept built from the Counter running game. The offense uses convincing misdirection to pull linebackers and safeties out of position before attacking the space created behind them. When paired with a successful Counter run, this concept consistently creates high-percentage throwing opportunities.
Why Counter Pass Works
The initial counter action causes second-level defenders to flow toward the perceived running play. As they commit, receivers work behind them into open windows while the quarterback resets and delivers the football. The deception forces defenders to defend both misdirection and vertical routes.
Best Formations
Singleback Formation is an excellent home for Counter Pass because it mirrors traditional Counter footwork while providing a clean platform for the quarterback after the fake.
Personnel
11 Personnel is ideal because it balances the running game with multiple receiving threats. A disciplined quarterback and receivers who maintain route timing are critical.

Responsibilities
- Quarterback: Sell the Counter fake, reset quickly, and work the passing progression.
- Running back: Execute the Counter action before becoming a late outlet if tagged.
- Offensive line: Sell Counter blocking while maintaining pass protection.
- Tight end: Run the primary crossing or intermediate route.
- Receivers: Stretch the defense vertically and horizontally with disciplined spacing.
Quarterback Progression
- Execute a convincing Counter fake.
- Read linebacker movement.
- Throw the intermediate crossing route if available.
- Progress to the deeper route.
- Check down or scramble if necessary.
Coverage Adjustments
Cover 2
Attack behind the linebackers before the safeties recover.
Cover 3
Read the hook defenders and throw into the vacated window.
Man Coverage
Expect crossing routes to gain separation through traffic.
Blitz
Finish the fake only if protection allows, then deliver on rhythm.
Coaching Points
- Every player must sell the run.
- Reset feet before throwing.
- Maintain route spacing.
- Avoid forcing late throws.
Common Youth Mistakes
- Weak run fake.
- Quarterback rushing mechanics.
- Receivers drifting off landmarks.
- Offensive line abandoning protection.
Installation Progression
Install the Counter run first, then the play-action fake, quarterback footwork, and receiver timing before practicing against live defensive looks.
Practice Drill
Alternate Counter and Counter Pass during team periods to reinforce identical backfield action while training quarterbacks to read linebacker reactions.
Youth Coaching Tips
Counter Pass becomes significantly more effective after defenses begin overplaying the Counter run. Build confidence in the running game before relying on the pass complement.
Why Counter Pass Succeeds
Counter Pass succeeds because it uses misdirection to manipulate second-level defenders and creates high-percentage throwing lanes behind aggressive run fits.
