Waggle

Waggle is the signature play-action pass of the Wing T offense. Built to complement Buck Sweep and Belly, Waggle uses convincing backfield action and a moving pocket to create multiple route levels while changing the quarterback’s launch point. Because defenses often overreact to Wing T run action, Waggle consistently creates open receivers at the intermediate and deep levels.

Why Waggle Works

Every element of Waggle mirrors the offense’s core running game. The offensive line, backs, and quarterback all sell the run before the quarterback rolls away from the fake. As linebackers attack downhill and defensive backs respond to run support, crossing routes and delayed releases open behind them.

Best Formations

The Wing T Formation is the classic alignment because it naturally disguises the play behind Buck Sweep and Belly action while creating excellent rollout angles.

Personnel

21 Personnel is traditional, using a fullback and wingback to sell the run. Athletic quarterbacks and reliable tight ends make the concept especially effective.

Responsibilities

  • Quarterback: Sell the run, boot outside, maintain throwing posture, and work the progression.
  • Fullback and wingback: Carry out convincing run fakes before releasing if tagged.
  • Offensive line: Sell run blocking while protecting the rollout path.
  • Tight end: Run the primary crossing or corner route.
  • Receivers: Stretch coverage vertically and horizontally.

Quarterback Progression

  1. Execute the run fake.
  2. Roll outside under control.
  3. Read the flat route.
  4. Progress to the crossing route.
  5. Finish with the deep route, checkdown, or run.

Coverage Adjustments

Cover 2

Attack behind the linebackers before the safeties recover.

Cover 3

Read the flat defender and throw behind him.

Man Coverage

Expect natural separation from crossing routes.

Blitz

Continue the rollout and take the easiest completion.

Coaching Points

  • Sell the run with every player.
  • Keep shoulders square while rolling.
  • Maintain route spacing.
  • Avoid late throws back across the field.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Weak run fake.
  • Quarterback drifting too deep.
  • Receivers bunching together.
  • Losing backside contain.

Installation Progression

Install the companion running plays first, then teach the quarterback rollout, receiver timing, and finally full-speed execution against multiple coverages.

Practice Drill

Run Waggle repeatedly after Buck Sweep periods so defenders naturally react to the run action. Emphasize rollout mechanics, timing, and progression discipline.

Youth Coaching Tips

Waggle becomes much more effective after Buck Sweep and Belly consistently threaten the defense. Build the run game first, then introduce the play-action complement.

Why Waggle Succeeds

Waggle succeeds because it combines outstanding run deception with a moving pocket and layered route concepts, forcing defenders to defend both the run and pass simultaneously.
