Wham Run Concept
Wham is a deceptive inside running concept that allows an H-back, tight end, or motion player to block an interior defensive lineman who is intentionally left unblocked by the offensive line. The concept is especially effective against dominant defensive tackles because it uses their penetration against them while preserving simple blocking rules for the offensive line.
Why Wham Works
Many interior defenders attack upfield immediately after the snap. Wham invites that penetration. As the defender enters the backfield, the motion player or H-back delivers a surprise block from the side, creating a vertical running lane before linebackers can adjust.
Best Formations
Singleback and I Formation provide natural alignments for an H-back or tight end to execute the wham block. Shotgun Doubles also works well when motion disguises the blocking assignment.
Personnel
11 Personnel is the preferred grouping because the tight end or H-back becomes the wham blocker. The concept can also be adapted to 12 Personnel for additional physicality.

Blocking Responsibilities
- Offensive line: Zone or base block everyone except the designated wham defender.
- H-back or tight end: Cross the formation and block the unblocked defensive lineman from the side.
- Receivers: Secure perimeter defenders.
- Running back: Press the inside aiming point and read the wham block.
- Quarterback: Execute a clean handoff and carry out the fake.
Running Back Read
- Press the play-side A or B gap.
- Read the wham block.
- Hit the crease immediately once the defender is sealed.
- Stay vertical through contact.
- Bounce only if the interior completely collapses.
Defensive Adjustments
Even Fronts
Target disruptive defensive tackles with the wham block.
Odd Fronts
Communicate clearly which interior defender will be trapped.
Slanting Fronts
Trust the blocking rules instead of chasing movement.
Coaching Points
- The wham blocker must stay hidden until the last moment.
- Offensive linemen cannot accidentally touch the designated defender.
- Running backs should be patient for one step, then explode vertically.
- Motion should be consistent to avoid tipping the play.
Common Youth Mistakes
- Wham blocker arriving too early.
- Linemen blocking the intended wham defender.
- Running backs outrunning the block.
- Poor timing between motion and the snap.
Installation Progression
Teach offensive-line rules first, then the wham block, then backfield timing. Progress from walk-throughs to half-line drills before adding live defensive fronts.
Practice Drill
Use one defensive tackle and one H-back. Repeat the wham block against different alignments while the running back practices reading the resulting crease.
Youth Coaching Tips
Wham is an excellent answer for teams facing one dominant defensive tackle. Young players quickly understand the surprise block, making the concept easier to install than many pulling schemes.
Why Wham Succeeds
Wham succeeds because it punishes aggressive interior defenders while giving the offense a clean vertical running lane with relatively simple assignments.
