Sweep Run Concept

The Sweep is a perimeter running concept designed to get the football outside the tackles quickly while allowing lead blockers to create running lanes along the edge. It has been a staple of youth football for decades because it combines simple assignments with opportunities for explosive plays in space.

Why Sweep Works

Rather than attacking the defense between the tackles, Sweep stretches the edge by using lead blockers and angles to outflank pursuit. If blockers secure the corner and seal pursuing defenders inside, the ball carrier can turn the corner with momentum and attack open grass.

Best Formations

Sweep is traditionally associated with the I Formation, Singleback, and Wing T because they naturally provide lead blockers. Spread formations can also run Sweep effectively by widening defenders before the snap.

Personnel

21 Personnel is ideal when using a fullback as the lead blocker. Eleven personnel also executes Sweep well by using a tight end or H-back to lead around the edge.

Blocking Responsibilities

  • Play-side linemen: Reach or seal defenders toward the inside.
  • Pulling blocker or fullback: Lead through the alley and block the first force defender.
  • Tight end: Secure the edge defender.
  • Wide receivers: Block the cornerback or most dangerous support defender.
  • Running back: Stay tight behind the lead blocker before accelerating outside.

Running Back Read

  1. Press the edge behind the lead blocker.
  2. Read the force defender.
  3. Turn the corner if the edge is secured.
  4. Cut inside the lead block if defenders overplay the perimeter.
  5. Get north-south once daylight appears.

Defensive Adjustments

Even Fronts

Seal the defensive end and force linebackers to scrape over the top.

Odd Fronts

Communicate edge responsibilities against outside linebackers.

Fast Pursuit

Stay patient behind blockers and exploit over-pursuit with a decisive cut.

Coaching Points

  • Reach blocks win the edge.
  • Lead blockers should attack inside-out.
  • Running backs should avoid outrunning their blockers.
  • Finish every run with positive yardage.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Bouncing too wide.
  • Receivers missing perimeter blocks.
  • Lead blockers attacking the wrong defender.
  • Running backs cutting before the alley develops.

Installation Progression

Teach edge blocking first, then lead-block timing and running back path. Progress through half-line drills, perimeter-run periods, and full-team practice.

Practice Drill

Run Sweep against rotating edge defenders while emphasizing blocker leverage, running-back patience, and acceleration after clearing the corner.

Youth Coaching Tips

Young runners often believe they must race to the sideline. Teach them to follow the lead blocker first. A patient path usually produces a much larger gain.

Why Sweep Succeeds

Sweep succeeds because it creates favorable angles on the perimeter while allowing athletic runners to attack open space behind disciplined blocking.
