Jet Sweep Run Concept
Jet Sweep is a perimeter running concept that uses full-speed receiver motion to get the football outside the defense before it can properly react. The ball carrier receives the handoff while already moving, allowing the offense to attack the edge with speed while forcing defenders to communicate, shift, and pursue across the formation.
Why Jet Sweep Works
The motion begins before the snap, forcing linebackers, safeties, and corners to adjust their alignment. That movement often creates hesitation or poor pursuit angles. By handing the football to a receiver already at full speed, the offense gains an immediate advantage on the perimeter while creating opportunities for complementary plays such as Jet Power, Jet Counter, and play-action.
Best Formations
Jet Sweep is most effective from Spread and Trips formations because they naturally widen the defense. Shotgun alignments simplify the timing between the quarterback and the motion receiver while preserving the threat of inside runs.
Personnel
10 and 11 Personnel are both excellent choices. Fast slot receivers make ideal jet runners, while athletic tight ends and running backs can provide effective perimeter blocking.

Responsibilities
- Motion receiver: Time the motion to reach the quarterback at the snap, secure the handoff, then attack the edge immediately.
- Quarterback: Snap the ball at the correct point in the motion and extend the handoff cleanly while carrying out the fake.
- Offensive line: Reach or zone block toward the play side and prevent penetration.
- Tight end and receivers: Seal the force defender and block the most dangerous perimeter pursuit.
- Running back: Sell the inside run fake to hold linebackers.
Ball Carrier Read
- Secure the handoff before looking upfield.
- Press the outside landmark.
- Read the force defender.
- Turn the corner if the edge is sealed.
- Plant and get vertical if pursuit overruns the play.
Defensive Adjustments
Even Fronts
Stretch the defensive end horizontally and force linebackers to run.
Odd Fronts
Identify the force player before the snap and communicate edge responsibilities.
Blitz Pressure
Maintain motion timing and trust perimeter blocking rather than cutting inside too early.
Coaching Points
- Motion speed must remain constant.
- Snap timing is critical.
- Receivers block with leverage, not just effort.
- One decisive cut after reaching the edge.
Common Youth Mistakes
- Snapping the ball too early or too late.
- Dropped handoffs caused by poor timing.
- Ball carrier outrunning blockers.
- Receivers missing the force defender.
Installation Progression
Teach the motion without the football first. Add quarterback timing, then blocking assignments, followed by half-speed walk-throughs, perimeter-run drills, and full-team repetitions.
Practice Drill
Use cones to establish the motion landmark. Repeatedly practice snap timing and handoffs before adding edge defenders and live blocking.
Youth Coaching Tips
Do not rush the installation. Most Jet Sweep problems come from inconsistent motion timing rather than blocking. Once the exchange is automatic, the concept becomes one of the fastest perimeter plays in the offense.
Why Jet Sweep Succeeds
Jet Sweep succeeds because it forces the defense to defend speed, motion, and width simultaneously while placing the football in the hands of an athlete already moving at full speed.
