Shallow Cross Passing Concept
Shallow Cross is built around one fast receiver crossing the formation underneath the linebackers while deeper routes create space behind the defense. It is a high-percentage concept that gives youth quarterbacks an easy completion while creating opportunities for yards after the catch.
Why Shallow Cross Works
The shallow route forces linebackers to flow across the field. If they chase the crossing receiver, intermediate routes open behind them. If they gain depth, the shallow route becomes an easy throw with room to run.
Best Formations
Spread and Trips formations provide clean crossing angles and natural spacing. Shotgun versions improve timing and visibility for younger quarterbacks.
Personnel
11 Personnel is an excellent starting point, though 10 Personnel allows additional spacing for the crossing receiver.

Route Responsibilities
- Crossing receiver: Sprint across the field at 3–5 yards without drifting upfield.
- Outside receiver: Vertical clear route to remove deep coverage.
- Intermediate receiver: Dig or sit route behind the linebackers.
- Running back: Check protection before releasing into the flat.
Quarterback Progression
- Confirm coverage before the snap.
- Read the shallow crosser immediately after the drop.
- Progress to the intermediate route if linebackers jump the crosser.
- Finish with the outlet if needed.
Coverage Adjustments
Man Coverage
The shallow route naturally creates separation through speed and traffic.
Cover 2
Work the dig behind expanding linebackers.
Cover 3
Throw the crosser after it clears underneath defenders.
Quarters
Stay patient and take the shallow completion if deep defenders remain disciplined.
Coaching Points
- Keep the shallow route flat.
- Do not slow before crossing the formation.
- Throw on rhythm.
- Coach receivers to turn upfield immediately after the catch.
Common Youth Mistakes
- Crossing too deep.
- Looking for the football too early.
- Quarterbacks drifting in the pocket.
- Receivers colliding because landmarks were not practiced.
Installation Progression
Teach the crossing route first, then add the complementary routes before introducing the quarterback progression in routes on air, 7-on-7, and team periods.
Practice Drill
Place cones at the intended crossing depth and repeat the concept against rotating linebacker alignments to reinforce timing and landmarks.
Youth Coaching Tips
The shallow receiver should run full speed every repetition. Consistent speed creates timing for the quarterback and prevents defenders from recovering.
Why Shallow Cross Succeeds
Shallow Cross succeeds because it forces linebackers to defend horizontal movement while creating simple, repeatable throws underneath.
