In Passing Concept

The In concept features a receiver attacking vertically before making a sharp break toward the middle of the field. It is a dependable intermediate route that teaches receivers disciplined landmarks while giving quarterbacks a timing throw between the linebackers and safeties.

Why In Works

The vertical stem forces defensive backs to respect the deep route before the receiver breaks inside. That movement creates a passing window behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties. When combined with vertical clear routes or shallow crosses, the In route becomes even more difficult to defend.

Best Formations

Doubles and Spread formations provide balanced spacing that keeps the middle of the field uncluttered. Shotgun alignments improve visibility and rhythm for developing quarterbacks.

Personnel

11 Personnel is an excellent starting point because tight ends and slot receivers often excel on intermediate breaking routes. The concept also works well from 10 Personnel.

Route Responsibilities

  • Primary receiver: Vertical stem to the assigned depth before making a flat 90-degree break inside.
  • Outside receiver: Vertical clear, fade, or post to occupy deep coverage.
  • Underneath receiver: Shallow cross, hook, or outlet route to influence linebackers.
  • Running back: Check protection before releasing underneath.

Quarterback Progression

  1. Identify the safety shell before the snap.
  2. Confirm linebacker depth after the snap.
  3. Throw the In route as it enters the throwing window.
  4. Progress to the underneath outlet if the window closes.
  5. Never force the throw after the receiver passes the landmark.

Coverage Adjustments

Cover 2

Attack the window between linebackers and safeties.

Cover 3

Allow the receiver to clear the hook defenders before delivering the ball.

Man Coverage

Throw with anticipation and lead the receiver away from trailing coverage.

Quarters

Work the In route only when the safeties remain occupied by vertical threats.

Coaching Points

  • Sell the vertical release.
  • Reach full depth before breaking.
  • Break flat across the field without drifting.
  • Quarterbacks should trust timing over waiting for obvious separation.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Breaking too early.
  • Rounded cuts.
  • Quarterbacks staring at the route.
  • Receivers slowing before the break.

Installation Progression

Teach the stem, break, and landmark independently before combining the route with complementary concepts during routes on air, 7-on-7, and team sessions.

Practice Drill

Use linebackers and a deep safety while quarterbacks practice delivering the football just as the receiver clears the second level.

Youth Coaching Tips

Use cones to reinforce exact break depth. Young receivers often shorten the route unless landmarks are practiced consistently.

Why In Succeeds

The In concept succeeds because it attacks a reliable intermediate window while reinforcing disciplined timing between the quarterback and receiver.
