Glance RPO

Glance RPO pairs a downhill running play with a Glance route, giving the quarterback a simple post-snap decision based on a single conflict defender. The Glance route attacks the space just behind aggressive linebackers while the run threatens the defense inside, making it an outstanding answer against teams that overload the tackle box.

Why Glance RPO Works

As linebackers step forward to stop the run, the Glance route slips behind them into the intermediate window. If the read defender remains in coverage, the quarterback hands the football to the running back and lets the offense take advantage of favorable numbers in the box.

Best Formations

Spread Formation provides ideal spacing for the Glance route while maintaining a balanced shotgun running attack and clear throwing lanes.

Personnel

11 Personnel is the preferred grouping because it combines a strong inside running game with multiple receiving threats capable of stretching the defense vertically.

Responsibilities

  • Quarterback: Read the conflict defender and make a decisive give-or-throw decision.
  • Running back: Execute the called run every snap.
  • Offensive line: Block the run concept on every play.
  • Glance receiver: Attack vertically, bend inside, and expect the football immediately.
  • Other receivers: Execute complementary routes that remove underneath defenders.

Quarterback Progression

  1. Identify the conflict defender.
  2. Execute the shotgun mesh.
  3. Read the defender’s first movement.
  4. Throw the Glance route if the defender attacks the run.
  5. Hand the football off if the defender remains in coverage.

Defensive Adjustments

Loaded Box

Throw the Glance route.

Light Box

Hand the football off.

Blitz

Replace the blitzing defender with the Glance throw.

Coaching Points

  • Read one defender only.
  • Throw on rhythm.
  • Offensive line always blocks the run.
  • Never guess the decision.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Holding the football too long.
  • Flattening the Glance route.
  • Slow mesh mechanics.
  • Predetermining the read.

Installation Progression

Install the base running play first, then teach the Glance route, followed by the quarterback read and full-speed team periods.

Practice Drill

Use one conflict defender whose reaction changes every repetition while quarterbacks practice disciplined give-or-throw decisions and receivers maintain proper Glance depth.

Youth Coaching Tips

Teach receivers to maintain vertical speed before breaking inside. The Glance route works because it initially looks like a vertical release.

Why Glance RPO Succeeds

Glance RPO succeeds because it places one defender in conflict while attacking the space aggressive linebackers naturally vacate.
