Fade / Stop
Fade / Stop is a quick-game concept that gives the outside receiver two complementary options based on defensive leverage. Against tight coverage, the receiver continues vertically on the Fade. Against soft coverage, the receiver throttles down into a Stop route, creating an easy completion. This flexibility makes the concept an effective answer against multiple coverages without changing the play call.
Why Fade / Stop Works
The receiver forces the defender to defend both the deep ball and the quick stop. If the defender bails to protect against the Fade, the receiver stops underneath for an easy throw. If the defender sits aggressively, the receiver continues vertically and attacks over the top.
Best Formations
Spread Formation provides excellent spacing by isolating the outside receiver and creating a clear pre-snap picture for the quarterback.
Personnel
10 and 11 Personnel are ideal because they maximize space while keeping multiple receiving threats on the field.

Responsibilities
- Quarterback: Read the cornerback’s leverage and deliver the appropriate throw on rhythm.
- Outside receiver: Convert the route based on coverage while maintaining proper timing.
- Inside receivers: Execute complementary routes that occupy underneath defenders.
- Offensive line: Provide disciplined quick-game pass protection.
- Running back: Protect or release according to the play design.
Quarterback Progression
- Identify cornerback leverage.
- Confirm safety alignment.
- Throw the Stop against cushion.
- Throw the Fade against aggressive coverage.
- Progress elsewhere if leverage is unfavorable.
Defensive Adjustments
Press Coverage
Expect the Fade conversion.
Off Coverage
Take the Stop route immediately.
Cover 2
Read the corner before attacking vertically.
Blitz
Deliver the football on rhythm.
Coaching Points
- Receiver and quarterback must see the same leverage.
- Maintain vertical speed before stopping.
- Throw with anticipation.
- Protect the football near the sideline.
Common Youth Mistakes
- Stopping too early.
- Quarterback misreading leverage.
- Rounded route stems.
- Drifting toward the middle of the field.
Installation Progression
Teach the Fade and Stop routes independently before introducing the conversion read between the quarterback and receiver.
Practice Drill
Alternate press and off coverage while quarterbacks and receivers practice making identical coverage reads and route conversions.
Youth Coaching Tips
Keep the read simple. Young quarterbacks should focus primarily on the cornerback’s leverage before worrying about more advanced coverage rotations.
Why Fade / Stop Succeeds
Fade / Stop succeeds because it allows one route to attack both aggressive and conservative coverage without changing the play.
