All Hitches Passing Concept

All Hitches is one of the simplest and most effective quick-game concepts in football. Every eligible receiver runs a hitch route, giving the quarterback multiple rhythm throws while teaching receivers how to find soft spots in zone coverage and work back to the football.

Why All Hitches Works

Although every receiver runs the same basic route, the concept stretches the defense horizontally. Corners and underneath defenders must defend multiple receivers stopping at nearly the same time, making it difficult to eliminate every throwing lane.

Best Formations

Spread and Doubles formations provide balanced spacing and clear throwing windows. Shotgun alignments give young quarterbacks a consistent rhythm and improve visibility.

Personnel

10 Personnel and 11 Personnel both execute All Hitches well. The concept does not require exceptional speed, making it ideal for developing teams.

Route Responsibilities

  • Outside receivers: Drive vertically for five to six yards before snapping down into a hitch.
  • Slot receivers: Run disciplined hitch routes while settling away from defenders.
  • Running back: Check protection, then release as a checkdown if included.
  • Every receiver should work back toward the quarterback after stopping.

Quarterback Progression

  1. Identify pre-snap leverage.
  2. Throw immediately to the receiver with the largest cushion.
  3. Progress across the field if the first window closes.
  4. Take the checkdown rather than forcing a contested throw.

Coverage Adjustments

Cover 2

Attack the space underneath the cornerbacks.

Cover 3

Find the receiver with the softest cushion underneath.

Man Coverage

Throw on anticipation before defenders can break downhill.

Quarters

Take efficient completions and keep the offense ahead of schedule.

Coaching Points

  • Every hitch must be run at the same depth.
  • Receivers should stop under control and work back to the football.
  • Quarterbacks should trust pre-snap leverage.
  • Rhythm is more important than arm strength.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Rounded breaks.
  • Hitch routes at inconsistent depths.
  • Waiting too long to throw.
  • Receivers drifting after stopping.

Installation Progression

Teach the hitch route first, then practice mirrored formations on air before adding defenders and progressing into 7-on-7 and team drills.

Practice Drill

Align defenders at different depths and challenge quarterbacks to identify the receiver with the best pre-snap leverage before every throw.

Youth Coaching Tips

Use All Hitches early in the season to teach timing, route discipline, and quarterback decision-making before introducing more advanced concepts.

Why All Hitches Succeeds

All Hitches succeeds because it is easy to install, builds quarterback confidence, and consistently provides safe, high-percentage completions.
