Veer Run Concept

Veer is the foundational option concept of the Flexbone offense. Instead of blocking the play-side defensive end, the quarterback reads him after the snap while meshing with the fullback. The defender is placed in conflict—if he tackles the fullback, the quarterback keeps the ball; if he widens with the quarterback, the fullback receives the handoff. This simple read allows the offense to gain a numerical advantage without adding additional blockers.

Why Veer Works

Veer removes one defender from the blocking count and forces disciplined defensive football. Every incorrect decision by the read defender produces a positive play. Combined with disciplined option mechanics, Veer attacks the defense inside while maintaining an immediate perimeter threat.

Best Formations

The Flexbone Formation is the traditional home of Veer because it naturally positions the fullback, slot backs, and quarterback for option football while creating balanced blocking angles.

Personnel

Veer works best with a decisive quarterback, a physical fullback, and athletic slot backs who can execute pitch responsibilities. Consistency is more important than elite speed.

Responsibilities

  • Offensive line: Base block everyone except the read defender.
  • Quarterback: Execute the mesh and read the defensive end.
  • Fullback: Attack the dive path without slowing.
  • Slot back: Maintain pitch relationship and force the defense to defend the perimeter.
  • Wide receivers: Stalk block defensive backs.

Quarterback Progression

  1. Identify the read defender.
  2. Open and mesh with the fullback.
  3. Read the defender’s first commitment.
  4. Give if he widens.
  5. Keep if he collapses on the fullback.

Defensive Adjustments

Even Fronts

Read the play-side defensive end.

Odd Fronts

Confirm the correct read key before every snap.

Scrape Exchange

Remain disciplined and trust the read rather than guessing.

Coaching Points

  • Eyes stay on the read defender.
  • Fullback never slows.
  • Mesh should be consistent every rep.
  • The pitch relationship must remain available after the keep.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Predetermined quarterback decisions.
  • Looking at the fullback instead of the read.
  • Slot backs getting too wide or too deep.
  • Linemen blocking the read defender.

Installation Progression

Install the mesh first, then the quarterback read against one defender, then add the fullback, slot back, offensive line, and finally team periods.

Practice Drill

Use one read defender and repeatedly vary his reaction while quarterbacks practice making immediate give-or-keep decisions without hesitation.

Youth Coaching Tips

Do not install multiple option concepts simultaneously. Master Veer first, then expand into Midline and Triple Option using the same option fundamentals.

Why Veer Succeeds

Veer succeeds because it forces one defender to defend two runners while giving the offense an extra blocker through disciplined option football.
