Stick RPO

Stick RPO combines a downhill running concept with the quick Stick passing concept, allowing the quarterback to make a simple post-snap decision based on one conflict defender. It gives the offense an efficient answer against overloaded boxes while preserving a dependable inside running game.

Why Stick RPO Works

The offensive line blocks the run while the Stick route attacks the space vacated by linebackers stepping forward to stop it. If the read defender commits to the run, the quarterback throws the Stick route. If the defender widens underneath the pass, the football is handed to the running back.

Best Formations

Trips Formation provides the ideal spacing for the Stick concept while maintaining a strong shotgun running game and creating an easy read for the quarterback.

Personnel

11 Personnel is the preferred grouping because it provides three receiving threats while preserving balance in the run game.

Responsibilities

  • Quarterback: Read the conflict defender and decide whether to give or throw.
  • Running back: Execute the called run every snap.
  • Offensive line: Block the run concept without reacting to the pass.
  • Stick receiver: Run the Stick route at full speed and expect the football.
  • Other receivers: Execute complementary routes to clear coverage.

Quarterback Progression

  1. Identify the conflict defender.
  2. Execute the mesh.
  3. Read the defender’s first movement.
  4. Throw the Stick route if the defender fits the run.
  5. Hand the football off if the defender expands into coverage.

Defensive Adjustments

Loaded Box

Take the Stick throw.

Light Box

Hand the football off.

Blitz

Deliver the Stick immediately if the read defender vacates coverage.

Coaching Points

  • Read one defender only.
  • Offensive line always blocks the run.
  • Receivers finish every route.
  • Make one decisive decision.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Guessing the read.
  • Slow mesh mechanics.
  • Receivers shortening routes.
  • Quarterbacks staring at receivers.

Installation Progression

Install the Stick concept and base run separately before combining them into the RPO. Progress from read drills to full-team periods.

Practice Drill

Use one conflict defender with changing reactions while quarterbacks practice disciplined give-or-throw decisions.

Youth Coaching Tips

Stick RPO is an excellent second RPO after Bubble RPO because the quarterback still reads only one defender while learning a different quick-game concept.

Why Stick RPO Succeeds

Stick RPO succeeds because it pairs a reliable inside run with a high-percentage quick pass that punishes aggressive linebackers.
