Bubble RPO

Bubble RPO combines a traditional inside running play with a Bubble Screen, allowing the quarterback to choose between attacking the box with the run or exploiting numbers on the perimeter with a quick throw. It is one of the simplest and most effective run-pass option concepts for youth football because the quarterback reads only one conflict defender.

Why Bubble RPO Works

When defenses overload the box to stop the run, the Bubble Screen immediately attacks the uncovered perimeter. If defenders widen to defend the receivers, the offense gains favorable numbers for the running play. One defender is forced to defend two offensive threats.

Best Formations

Trips Formation is the preferred alignment because it naturally creates a two-blocker Bubble Screen while maintaining a strong inside running game.

Personnel

11 Personnel is the most common grouping because it provides three receivers while preserving a balanced running attack.

Responsibilities

  • Quarterback: Read the conflict defender and make a give-or-throw decision.
  • Running back: Execute the called run as though every snap is a handoff.
  • Offensive line: Block the run concept every play.
  • Bubble receiver: Execute the Bubble Screen path at full speed.
  • Perimeter blockers: Secure the most dangerous defenders from the inside out.

Quarterback Progression

  1. Identify the conflict defender.
  2. Execute the mesh.
  3. Read the defender’s first movement.
  4. Throw the Bubble Screen if the defender commits to the run.
  5. Hand the ball off if the defender widens into coverage.

Defensive Adjustments

Loaded Box

Take the Bubble Screen.

Expanded Perimeter

Hand the football off and trust the run.

Blitz Pressure

React immediately if the read defender vacates coverage.

Coaching Points

  • Never predetermine the decision.
  • Bubble receiver runs every route at full speed.
  • Offensive line always blocks the run.
  • Deliver the football immediately when throwing.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Quarterbacks guessing instead of reading.
  • Bubble receiver drifting upfield too early.
  • Blockers chasing defenders.
  • Slow mesh timing.

Installation Progression

Install the Bubble Screen and running concept separately before combining them into the RPO. Practice against multiple defensive reactions before adding live team periods.

Practice Drill

Use one conflict defender whose reaction changes every repetition while quarterbacks practice disciplined give-or-throw decisions and receivers work perimeter blocking.

Youth Coaching Tips

Bubble RPO is an excellent first RPO because it teaches quarterbacks post-snap decision-making using familiar running and screen concepts.

Why Bubble RPO Succeeds

Bubble RPO succeeds because it forces one defender to defend both the interior running game and the perimeter screen at the same time.
