Smoke Screen

Smoke Screen is a quick perimeter screen thrown immediately to an outside receiver aligned with a cushion from the defender. The objective is simple: take the free yards the defense gives you while forcing defensive backs to tackle in space. It is one of the fastest throws in football and an excellent extension of the running game.

Why Smoke Screen Works

When cornerbacks align well off the receiver, the offense can complete the pass before the defender closes. The receiver catches the football in stride, gets vertical quickly, and relies on nearby blockers to create additional yardage.

Best Formations

Spread Formation provides ideal spacing and isolates the outside receiver, making defensive leverage easy for the quarterback to evaluate before the snap.

Personnel

10 and 11 Personnel are excellent choices because they maximize space and put athletic receivers on the perimeter.

Responsibilities

  • Quarterback: Identify cushion, catch the snap, and throw immediately.
  • Receiver: Catch first, attack vertically, and protect the football.
  • Inside receivers: Block the nearest support defenders.
  • Offensive line: Execute normal pass protection.
  • Running back: Check protection before releasing if tagged.

Quarterback Progression

  1. Count defenders outside.
  2. Confirm cornerback cushion.
  3. Throw immediately if leverage is favorable.
  4. Lead the receiver upfield.
  5. Work the called concept if the screen is unavailable.

Coverage Adjustments

Press Coverage

Do not force the throw.

Off Coverage

Take the easy completion.

Blitz

Smoke Screen is an excellent hot answer.

Coaching Points

  • Fast decision.
  • Accurate throw.
  • Catch before running.
  • Block leverage, not jerseys.

Common Youth Mistakes

  • Throwing late.
  • Receiver drifting sideways.
  • Missing perimeter blocks.
  • Looking upfield before securing the catch.

Installation Progression

Teach the pre-snap read, then throw timing, then perimeter blocking before adding team repetitions.

Practice Drill

Alternate press and off coverage while quarterbacks identify leverage before every snap and execute the appropriate decision.

Youth Coaching Tips

Teach quarterbacks that not every play must attack deep. Taking easy yards forces defenses to tighten coverage, creating opportunities later.

Why Smoke Screen Succeeds

Smoke Screen succeeds because it exploits defensive cushion with a high-percentage throw that quickly gets the football into open space.
