Why Now Screen Works

Modern defenses often align with significant cushion over outside receivers to prevent deep completions. The Now Screen takes advantage of that cushion by treating the completion as an extension of the running game. Instead of forcing difficult throws downfield, the offense consistently accepts easy yardage while forcing defensive backs to tackle in space.

Best Formations

The Spread Formation is ideal because it naturally isolates outside receivers and makes defensive leverage easy to identify before the snap.

Personnel

10 and 11 Personnel both work extremely well. Reliable receivers with strong hands and the ability to make defenders miss after the catch provide the greatest value.

Responsibilities

• Quarterback: Identify leverage before the snap and throw immediately.
• Screen receiver: Catch the football in stride and get vertical.
• Inside receivers: Block the nearest support defenders from the inside out.
• Offensive line: Execute standard pass protection.
• Running back: Carry out protection or route responsibilities.

Quarterback Progression

1. Count perimeter defenders.

3. Deliver the football immediately.
4. Lead the receiver upfield.
5. Return to the called concept if leverage is unfavorable.

Installation Progression

Teach the pre-snap leverage read first, then quarterback mechanics, receiver path, and perimeter blocking before progressing to team periods.

Practice Drill

Alternate defensive cushions before each snap. Quarterbacks must identify the leverage, announce the decision, and complete the throw on rhythm while receivers practice catching and accelerating vertically.
