Ohio Passing Concept
Ohio is a spread passing concept that combines a quick underneath option with a vertical stretch, giving the quarterback a fast answer against pressure while preserving the opportunity for an explosive play. It emphasizes reading leverage rather than forcing a predetermined throw.
Why Ohio Works
Ohio places immediate stress on underneath defenders while simultaneously threatening the deep secondary. Defenders who attack the short game leave space behind them, while defenders who gain depth surrender efficient completions underneath. This balance keeps the offense ahead of the chains.
Best Formations
Spread and Empty formations maximize horizontal spacing and simplify receiver landmarks. Shotgun alignments provide quarterbacks with better vision and consistent timing.
Personnel
10 Personnel is an excellent fit because four wide receivers naturally stretch the defense. The concept also adapts well to 11 Personnel with an athletic tight end replacing one receiver.

Route Responsibilities
- Outside receiver: Vertical release designed to remove deep coverage.
- Slot receiver: Option route working into open space based on leverage.
- Opposite receiver: Hitch or shallow route providing an immediate outlet.
- Running back: Check protection before releasing underneath if included.
Quarterback Progression
- Identify the safety shell and leverage before the snap.
- Confirm post-snap rotation.
- Read the option receiver first.
- Progress to the vertical throw if the defense drives downhill.
- Finish with the underneath outlet when the deep throw is unavailable.
Coverage Adjustments
Cover 2
Attack the soft window underneath before safeties can close.
Cover 3
Read the hook defenders and throw away from their movement.
Man Coverage
Trust the option receiver to separate based on leverage.
Quarters
Take efficient underneath completions and avoid forcing deep throws into double coverage.
Coaching Points
- Teach option-route rules before adding tempo.
- Quarterbacks should keep their eyes disciplined.
- Every receiver must maintain proper spacing.
- Throw on time rather than waiting for obvious separation.
Common Youth Mistakes
- Option receivers making late decisions.
- Quarterbacks predetermining the throw.
- Receivers drifting after their break.
- Ignoring the easy underneath completion.
Installation Progression
Install the base routes first, then teach the option adjustments against common coverages. Progress from routes on air to 7-on-7 before introducing full-speed team periods.
Practice Drill
Use rotating underneath defenders while the option receiver adjusts his route based on leverage. Require the quarterback to explain his read before each throw.
Youth Coaching Tips
For younger teams, simplify the option route into two possible decisions until players consistently recognize leverage and communicate with the quarterback.
Why Ohio Succeeds
Ohio succeeds because it teaches quarterbacks to read leverage while giving receivers flexibility to attack open grass instead of running into coverage.
